BEIRUT,(ST)_ The UN special envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura reiterated that resolving the crisis in Syria is political.
This came during a meeting yesterday with Deputy Secretary General of the Lebanese Hezbollah party Sheikh Naim Qassem in Beirut, in which discussions dealt with latest developments in the region, especially in Syria.
de Mistura stressed “identical views” between the two sides on resolving the crisis in Syria by political means, noting that his visit to Hezbollah “comes within the framework of consultation with all the parties that can help a political solution in the region, especially in Syria.
For his part, Qasim pointed that the only available solution in Syria is a political away from the pre-conditions and not exceed key parties actors to the solution.
At a news conference after his meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, de Mistura stressed that the UN ” will make every possible effort to push the political process in Syria forward,” pointing the existence of “a common priority to contain the terrorist threat,” adding that Daesh terrorist organization is behind “the raise of a lot of instability in the region.”
In response to a question about his role in resolving the crisis in Syria, the UN envoy said: “he would not have accepted this mission after 43 years of diplomatic work if he did not believe that there is a need and hope to that.”
De Mistura described his talks with Lebanese officials as ” long , fruitful and useful.”
Earlier in the day, de Mistura emphasized in a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam that Lebanon’s stability is very important for the region and the international community, noting that Lebanon is facing a fateful stage, hoping this will lead to a political solution in Syria.
