WARSAW, (ST) – Osama Azzam, the promising Syrian athlete, has achieved a remarkable result in the World Karate Championship ,currently being held in Poland, as he captured silver and bronze medals in his category.
Azzam took a silver medal in the individual kata contest after he beat his opponents in the preliminary, quarter and semi-final rounds before losing to a champion from Belorussia in the final.
Azzam also took a bronze medal in the individual fighting contest (free weight) “I am so happy to hoist the Syrian flag in this prestigious event. I dedicate my trophy to the brave Syrian army,”Azzam commented on his victory.
Scores of athletes representing 40 nations are taking part in this event.
Born in Suwaida, the 48 year-old –athlete has an eventful career as he trained the Suwaida team and the women’s national karate team from 1989 to 1992 .
It is to be noted that Azzam got a silver medal in the World Karate Championship which was staged in Serbia.
