DAMASCUS,(ST)_ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Faisal Mikdad met yesterday Sigrid Kaag head of the UN joint mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical weapons, and her accompanying delegation in the framework a farewell visit to Syria, marking the termination of the work of the joint mission by the end of this September.
Talks dealt with the achievements and the significant progress realized in the framework of Syria’s implementation of its obligations after its accession to the Chemical Weapons prohibition organization.
Dr. Mikdad stressed that closing the file of chemicals in Syrian would not be achieved without Syria’s seriousness in dealing with this file, at the instructions of President Bashar al-Assad, on the need to implement Syria’s obligations towards the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
He indicated the constructive and fruitful cooperation and close coordination between Syria and the UN Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons that led to the said achievements.
He stressed that at a time when Syria seriously worked for the implementation of its obligations, some countries known for their hostility to Syria, were trying to block and abuse the existing cooperation between Syria and the joint mission and to politicize the chemicals file.
For its part, Kaag expressed satisfaction with this great achievement that has been made and gratitude for the constructive and fruitful cooperation provided by the Syrian government, which led to the success of the efforts of the joint mission in Syria, noting that no pending matters require to keep the work of the mission in Damascus.
” This unprecedent achievement is in the history of Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, would not be attained without the efforts and cooperation of the Syrian government with the joint mission, ” she added
“Some people do not believe how countries in a state of war was able to get rid of its chemical weapons under severe and very complic and security conditions”, Mikdad said, stressing the need of dealing with Syria in light of this achievement as a state party to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
