Moscow: Russia, Syria Have Common Stance on Need to Respect Countries’ Sovereignty in Fighting Terrorism

MOSCOW-The Russian Foreign Ministry announced yesterday that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid Al-Moallem had a detailed discussion of the situation in Syria in the context of the growing terrorist activity in Syria and Iraq and the increasing of the horrible crimes committed by the terrorist and extremist bandit groups in these countries, especially the so-called “Islamic State”.

According to Itar Tass, the Ministry said Lavrov and al-Moallem confirmed the Russian and Syrian common views and stances on the need to fight extremism in all its manifestations and stressed the need to respect countries’ sovereignty and international law principles in this regard.

The two top diplomats expressed hope that the UNSC Resolution No. 2170 will be an important practical step in the fight against terrorism and in the context of the international community’s support for the efforts of the governments of Iraq and Syria to confront the danger of terrorism.

Earlier on Monday, Al-Moallem affirmed Syria’s readiness to cooperate at the regional and international levels in the area of combating terrorism in implementation of resolution No. 2170.

Lavrov: Global antiterrorist effort should be based on international law

Lavrov told a briefing Monday that “If there are plans to fight terrorists in Syria and other states, then it is necessary to do that in cooperation with their legitimate governments.”

Russia supports its Western partners’ desire to defeat international terrorism, but antiterrorist efforts should be based on the principles of international law, Lavrov stressed.

“The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff said the [Islamic State] should be fought not only in Iraq but also in Syria,” Lavrov said. “We support that. We should be united by the desire to defeat international terrorism and prevent [terrorists] from occupying new territories and establishing terrorist states.”
