Al-Moallem, Lavrov Exchange Letters on 70th Anniversary of Establishing Syrian-Russian Diplomatic Ties

  DAMASCUS, (ST)-Marking the 70 anniversary of establishing the Syrian-Russian diplomatic relations, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov exchanged letters affirming mutual keenness to enhance strategic relations between the two countries.

Al-Moallem expressed pride in the historically strong Syrian-Russian ties which have become an example to follow by countries of the world.

“These relations continue their development because they are based on key principles mainly mutual respect as well respecting international laws, UN Charter and peoples’ right to self determination away from any foreign intervention, maintaining international peace and security and establishing a multi-polar system that guarantees justice in international relations,” al-Moalllem said.

“Syria’s leadership and people are grateful to Russia’s historical stances, under President Vladimir Putin’s leadership, on supporting Syria in confrontation of the global war waged against the country by internationally and regionally-backed takfiri and terrorist groups in a blatant violation of international laws and UN Charter,” al-Moallem added.

 He stressed that “Syria has now stronger determination than ever to uproot terrorism and expel the terrorists to defend the country’s sovereignty and people, particularly because it has been proved that the takfiri mentality poses a serious a serious threat to peace, security and stability in the region and the world; a threat that should make some countries which have supported terrorism in Syria to reconsider their policies.”

 Al-Moallem affirmed that the international situation and the great challenges make the continuously growing Russian role a need to establish a world in which justice and peace prevail. He said that peoples of the world look with great satisfaction at the effective Russian role in the international arena in defense of international legitimacy.

Concluding his letter, al-Moallem reiterated Syria’s keenness to boost strategic relations with Russia to serve mutual interests and help attain international and regional peace and security. 

For his part, Lavrov said “political, economic and humanitarian relations between Russia and Syria are historical and these relations have been successfully growing since the 40s of last century.”

“Friendship and mutual respect will continue to contribute to enhancing cooperation between Russia and Syria in all domains,” Lavrov added, hoping that cooperation will be deepened to serve security and stability in the Middle East and to solve the crises in the region in accordance with international laws.

“We firmly Support Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity and we will continue to back the Syrian people and help them surpass the crisis through supporting comprehensive national dialogue and reforms away from foreign intervention,” Lavrov stressed.
