FM: New European Sanctions Disparate Response to Syrian People’s Great Achievement in Presidential Elections

DAMASCUS, (ST)-The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates yesterday condemned the decision made by the European Union’s Foreign Ministers’ Council to impose new restrictive measures on Syria.

A ministry official source said the European procedure expressed the continuity of the EU aggressive policy towards Syria.

“It is a poor and disparate  response to the great achievement attained by the Syrian people in the country’s presidential elections which affirmed the Syrians’ determination to defeat terrorism, confront all forms of pressures and maintain the national sovereignty and independent decision of their homeland,” the source added.

“The European Union which claims defending human rights is the same party which provides all forms of support for terrorists and for the takfiri mentality,” the source went on to say.

The source pointed out that the decision was made a mid the escalation of terrorist acts perpetrated by the so-called “Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)” and “Jabhat al-Nousra” organizations in Syria, “a thing that newly affirms the support of the European Union for these terrorist organizations which are committing the most horrible crimes against innocent Syrians and against Syria’s sacred places and cultural heritage. It also poses a serious threat to security and stability not only in the region but in the entire world.”

The ministry source asserted that “the European support for terrorists makes the European Union a full partner in the dirty war launched on Syria.”

According to the source, the European unilateral sanctions, which target the Syrian people’s living are not only a blatant violation of international laws and conventions, they also constitute the top level of political hypocrisy which has distinguished the European policies.
