Foreign Ministry: Transfer of Last Consignment of Chemical Weapons affirms Syria’ international commitment

DAMASCUS, (ST)_ The Last consignment of chemical weapons left Syria on Monday in a step affirming Syria’s commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), an official source in the Syrian National Committee for implementing the CWC at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said today.

“Syria confirms the completion of this humanitarian commitment in a time record period despite the ongoing security turmoil,” the source told SANA.

The source added “this great achievement wouldn’t have been done without the firm political will of H.E President Bashar Al-Assad and the initiative of President Vladimir Putin of Russia, and the great efforts exerted by the Syrian competent authorities to secure the transfer of these materials to the Syrian Coast.”

“This achievement, which is considered as a success for Syria, Organization of the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and for the United Nations, opens the door once again to spur the international community to compel Israel, the only party in the region who didn’t join the international conventions relating to the prevention of the spread of mass destruction weapons, to join these conventions to make the Middle East a zone free from weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical and biological weapons which Israel possesses,” the Source concluded.
