The June 3 presidential election in Syria was a politically important event which indicated that the Syrian people support the government and their President Bashar al-Assad.
Huge voter turnout in Syrian cities which where safe enough to hold the election like Damascus, Homs and Aleppo and other countries showed that Assad is still highly popular and his reelection as president in a sweeping landslide disproved claims by the West and certain Arab states that he no longer has legitimacy and popularity, Iran Daily wrote in its Opinion column on Tuesday.
Since the foreign-backed insurgency flared up in Syria three years ago, the West has been trying to mount pressure on Assad to step aside by organizing several conferences in Geneva, Switzerland. But now that he won the election by garnering the majority of the vote, Western countries demand for Assad‘s resignation sounds absolutely unreasonable.
UN-Arab League Special Envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimiˈs resignation is another indication that Assad cannot be removed from power as he will remain Syria’s president for a new 7-year term.
The West will have to acknowledge the outcome of the polls sooner or later since the future government of national unity will leave the Westerners with no choice but to establish ties with it.
Bashar al- Assad’s overwhelming victory comes as the Syrian army has made spectacular gains in its fight against militants in a number of battlefields including the Damascus countryside, Homs and Aleppo. Syrian forces managed to flush out insurgents from parts of these areas and restore security there in a way people were able to cast their vote in the recent presidential election.
With Assad‘s reelection, it is projected that stability will be restored in more flashpoints.
The Syrian government has already announced that it is ready to enter into negotiations with militants as it did about western city of Homs from which the insurgents withdrew following a deal mediated by the United Nations, Russia and Iran.
