EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas expressed her hope that EU foreign ministers, during their meeting in Brussels today, will reach an agreement on lifting economic sanctions on Syria.
Reuters quoted Kallas as saying in remarks prior to the meeting:” It is clear that we want to create jobs and livelihoods for the people in Syria so that it can become a more stable country.”
Officials confirmed that European ministers are considering a political decision to lift economic sanctions while maintaining those imposed on the Assad regime and taking measures against human rights violators.
On February 24, the European Union announced the suspension of some sanctions imposed on Syria under the former regime related to the banking, energy, and transport sectors.
