OCHA warns of continued danger of mines, UXO in Syria

NEW YORK, MAY.10, (ST)-The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned of the continued dangers of mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Syria.

The UN News website quoted the UN office as saying in a statement: “Contamination by unexploded ordnance, mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and other remnants of war continues to have deadly consequences throughout Syria after the fall of the former regime.”

The office clarified that since December 8, 2024, more than 900 civilian casualties have been reported, including 367 deaths and 542 injuries, with children accounting for more than a third of these casualties.

For his part, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq noted during a press conference that the United Nations and its partners continue to provide assistance throughout Syria, despite the challenging funding issue.

Haq declared that this assistance includes support for displacement sites, creating livelihood opportunities, restoring water supplies, and providing food assistance.
