S.J.U: A Free and responsible press is the true guarantee for Syria’s future

DAMASCUS, MAY.3, (ST)-The Syrian Journalists Union (S.J.U) stressed the importance of providing a free and independent space for journalism in Syria, as freedom of opinion and expression is not just a human right, but an absolute necessity for building a prosperous, democratic society capable of overcoming challenges.

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3 of each year, the Union, issued a statement highlighting the sacrifices made by Syrian journalists for a free homeland and a free press.

It also highlighted the enormous burdens and risks they have endured, even losing their lives in the pursuit of conveying the truth and enlightening public opinion. The Union noted that these sacrifices will not be in vain and will remain a beacon illuminating the path of journalists toward a more free and just future.

The Union emphasized the need to reject all forms of hate speech and sectarian and regional incitement, which have plagued Syrian society, asserting that the responsibilities of the press and media are to promote national unity, tolerance, and constructive dialogue, and to spread the values of peace and love that unite Syrians of all affiliations.

The union concluded its statement by saying: “We, at the Syrian Journalists Union, believe that a free and responsible press is the true guarantee for Syria’s future, and we will continue to work with determination to achieve this noble goal and provide a safe and enabling environment for the work of journalists and media professionals.”
