Communications Ministry  launches the first phase of the Ugarit (2) project in cooperation with UNIFI, Syrian Telecommunications Company, and CYTA

The Ministry of Communications and Technology announced, in collaboration with the American telecommunications company UNIFI, the Syrian Telecommunications Company, and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA), the successful launch of the first phase of the Ugarit (2) project, licensed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

The ministry clarified in a statement that the project aims to restore and modernize Syria’s international digital communication through Cyprus.
It added this strategic initiative represents an important step in enhancing the telecommunications infrastructure in Syria and expanding the country’s future digital capabilities.

The ministry noted that the first phase of the Ugarit (2) project focuses on upgrading terminal equipment within Syria, funded by the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA), and under the technical and organizational supervision of the American company UNIFI, to implement all aspects of the project according to international standards.

It pointed out that the completed upgrades will immediately enhance the resilience and quality of the Syrian digital network in the first phase.

In a statement to SANA, Minister of Communications and Technology Abdul Salam Haikal affirmed that launching the Ugarit (2) project marks the beginning of a new chapter in Syria’s digital future.

Minister Haikal added: “We are committed to establishing a modern, flexible, and competitive telecommunications infrastructure that meets the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.

For his part, Ghassan Akash, CEO of the Syrian Telecommunications Company, indicated that upgrading terminal equipment as part of the first phase of the Ugarit (1) project is a crucial step toward establishing next-generation international connectivity with low latency.

This development is essential for rebuilding Syria’s digital infrastructure and ensuring reliable services for our citizens and institutions.

Adrian Shanko, CEO of UNIFI Communications, stated: “The Alasia project licensed by OFAC is a strategic and forward-looking initiative aimed at restoring vital international connectivity in Syria.

Andreas Neokleous, CEO of CYTA, confirmed his company’s commitment to supporting regional initiatives that enhance connectivity and encourage cooperation through close collaboration with Syrian Telecommunications and CYTA.

It is worth noting that after completing the first phase, the project will move to its second phase, which focuses on cable infrastructure from the new Ugarit (2) submarine cable, thereby enhancing Syria’s access to global networks.
