A 6.2-magnitude earthquake today struck in the Silivri district, north of Istanbul. It was felt by residents of the city and surrounding provinces and occurred at a depth of 6.92 kilometers.
According to the Anadolu Agency, information published on the website of the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported that a 6.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded, with its epicenter in the Sea of Marmara in the Silivri district of Istanbul.
Silivri Mayor Bora Balcıoğlu confirmed that there were no landslides, noting that field teams were conducting rapid surveys of the area.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wished safety to all citizens affected by the earthquake, stressing that he was closely monitoring developments.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said after the earthquake via his social media account: The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency and all teams of relevant institutions have begun field surveys.
Following the earthquake, citizens fled their homes and workplaces in panic, and people continue to venture out into open areas and streets for fear of aftershocks.
AFAD has so far recorded three aftershocks in the Sea of Marmara, measuring 4.4, 4.5, and 4.9, at a depth of more than 7 kilometers.
