UN: Israeli attacks on Syrian territory are unacceptable

The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific Khaled Khiari expressed the international organization’s rejection of Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, noting that “Israel” plans to remain in Syria, which threatens the country’s stability and contravenes international agreements.

During an emergency session of the Security Council today regarding Israeli attacks on Syria, Khiari said: “Since the fall of the Assad regime last December, a number of reports have been submitted to the Security Council periodically regarding the 1974 disengagement agreement.
The Secretary-General condemned actions that were inconsistent with this agreement. There were hundreds of reports of Israeli attacks on Syria. Israel declared that these attacks were merely a warning for the future, in addition to announcing that it was building multiple sites in the buffer zone in the Golan Heights. Israeli officials also spoke of their intention to remain in Syria for the foreseeable future, and this threatens the political transitional phase in Syria.

Khiari recalled the presidential statement issued by the Security Council last month, which affirmed everyone’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, and to refraining from taking any measures or interfering in Syria’s affairs that would destabilize the country. Khiari also said that the presidential statement stressed the Council’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, pointing out that the opportunity for Syria’s stability after 14 years of war must be supported, so that efforts can continue toward an inclusive political transition that will enable the Syrian people to overcome the consequences of the war, revive the economy, achieve their legitimate aspirations, and contribute to regional stability.
