Dumas: French Decision to Prevent Syrians from Voting Ridiculous, Unacceptable Interference in Syria’s Internal Affairs
PARIS-Former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas has stressed that holding Syria’s presidential elections is “something good”. He described the French government’s decision on these elections as “ridiculous”.
Interviewed by SANA Correspondent in Paris, Dumas said the decision of the French government to prevent the Syrians resident in France from voting for their presidential candidate is a purely political decision and it is not acceptable, at the international level, to make such a decision.
“Elections are usually held in all countries’ embassies everywhere and it is unacceptable to change this procedure,” Dumas said.
He added “the French decision violates the international laws and conventions which were made long time ago. It is unacceptable to change these measures.”
“From the general ethics point of view, the French decision is an unacceptable interference in Syria’s internal affairs,” Dumas reiterated.
“The regrettable decision doesn’t match the rights and conventions of the internal French law as it will cause other violations and contradict the international policy of the France that led the revolution of 1789 which supported people’s rights to voting,” Dumas said, stressing that France’s general stance on the Syrian issue is ridiculous, because France backs a certain side and interferes in conflicts it has nothing to do with.
The former French top diplomat affirmed that “the Syrian government has struggled to defend its institutions and he expected that the coming few weeks will carry surprises on ground.”
“I admire the brave Syrian people who I have friendship ties with. I hope that the Syrians will soon attain peace because the sooner the war stops the better the situation will be, Dumas said.
He also referred to the growing fears of the European countries from possible terrorist attacks against them in case the so-called “European jihadists” return from Syria to their homes after receiving training by terrorist organizations.
