The European Union confirmed its firm position in supporting Syria, contributing to reconstruction efforts and economic recovery, noting that it will continue to help the Syrian people to build a free and prosperous future.
The Union explained in a statement today published on its official website that the ninth Brussels Conference, which is being held today under the title “Standing With Syria: Meeting The Needs of a Successful Transition”, aims to mobilize international support for an inclusive and peaceful transition, collect pledges of humanitarian and non-humanitarian assistance, and ensure sustainable support for Syrians inside Syria and host communities throughout the region, especially Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq.
“The fall of the Assad regime represents a historic moment and an opportunity for the Syrian people to decide the future of their country. In this critical period, the EU stands by the Syrian people, inside Syria and throughout the region, and will continue to support a comprehensive Syrian-led transition, help meet humanitarian needs, contribute to economic recovery, reconstruction and stabilization efforts in order to build a free, peaceful and prosperous Syria,” the EU said.
The union pointed out that it will support a civil society event later this year in Damascus to promote long-term participation.
In a related context, Britain pledged to provide aid to Syria amounting to 160 million pounds sterling.
