Presidential Candidates Launch Election Campaign

DAMASCUS, (ST)-The Three presidential candidates, Mr. Maher Abdul Hafeez Hajjar, Dr. Hassan Abdullah al-Nouri and Dr. Bashar Hafez Al-Assad yesterday launched their election campaigns after the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) had announced their names in the final list of presidential candidates.

Posters containing the pictures of the three candidates and selections of their election programs are heavily noticed in most of the streets of the capital, Damascus, and those of other Syrian cities.

Media outlets and social networking sites began a promotion campaign for the candidates, their programs and their images of future Syria.

Election campaigns are to end 24 hours before the election process begins on June 3.

On the official page of his election campaign titled SAWA (TOGETHER), candidate Bashar Al-Assad said “within the festive atmosphere we are currently experiencing, I hope that all citizens will dedicate their celebrations to honoring and caring for the families of martyrs without of who we couldn’t be here now.”

Dr. Al-Assad also urged the Syrians to dedicate their celebrations to caring for those whose living was affected by the crisis in Syria.”

“Amid this celebration atmosphere, we should care about those who missed their loved ones because of the ongoing war, whether martyrs, missing or kidnapped,” Dr. Al-Assad said.

“Luxury in celebrations within this era doesn’t necessarily express or mean love to a candidate; rather it hurts those who have been suffering because of the crisis. Let our real celebration be in helping each others, as there are many people who are worthier of such expenses,” Dr. Al-Assad stressed.

According to the General elections law candidates shouldn’t traduce each other or incite against each other. The law calls for preserving national unity and bans targeting the private lives of candidates.

Election campaigns shouldn’t contain any sectarian or ethnic indications or any expressions that contradict public order and morals, the election law says.

Presidential elections, as announced by the people’s Assembly, will be held on May 28, 2014 for the Syrians abroad and on June 3, 2014 for the Syrians inside Syria.
