Intensive efforts to preserve the heritage of ancient Aleppo

The Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Aleppo continues its work to preserve the rich heritage of the ancient city of Aleppo, despite the major challenges due to violations and damage to the historical structure.

The ancient city of Aleppo extends over an area of 400 hectares, and includes the most prominent archaeological landmarks such as the old markets, heritage neighborhoods, and the Aleppo Citadel.

The Directorate focuses on protecting these landmarks that reflect the city’s history spanning thousands of years.

As for the Aleppo National Museum, work is currently suspended due to new plans for its maintenance and rehabilitation, as it was greatly affected by the war and the earthquake, which led to the deterioration of its structural condition.

The Aleppo Citadel, including the Al-Arrsh (Throne) hall, the main gates, and the Ayyubid Mosque, needs comprehensive restoration to ensure that it regains its status as a prominent tourist destination.

The Directorate is working on implementing major restoration projects in the citadel, with the aim of reopening its doors to visitors from all over the world.

The Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Aleppo has expressed its readiness to cooperate with various parties and institutions interested in protecting heritage, to preserve this great historical legacy, through a shared responsibility that requires continuous local and international efforts.
