Russian and Iraqi foreign ministers discuss situation in Syria and its serious impacts on the region’s security

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein on Saturday affirmed that their countries are concerned with the situation in Syria and its serious impacts on the security of the region.

The Iraqi News Agency (INA) quoted the Iraqi Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement that Hussein met with his Russian counterpart Lavrov in the Qatari capital, Doha, and during the meeting, they discussed developments in Syria and the outcomes of the tripartite meeting held in Baghdad, which brought together the foreign ministers of Iraq, Syria and Iran.”

The statement indicated that the Russian Foreign Minister stressed the need to intensify efforts to spare Syria further tragedies, while Hussein pointed out that Iraq is striving to work to avoid the impact of the Syrian events on its security and stability.

Hussein stressed that “Iraq’s position is to intensify efforts to confront any violations or transgressions on the borders by terrorist groups, and that Iraq is interested in protecting its borders and the integrity of its territories.”
