DAMASCUS, (ST)-Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham on Monday sent letters of invitation to parliament speakers, MPs and national assemblies of a number of friendly countries urging them to send their election experts in order to follow up the upcoming Syrian presidential elections scheduled to be held on June 3rd, 2014.
The invitation letters read: “It is my pleasure to tell you that the presidential elections in the Syrian Arab Republic have been decided to be held on June 3rd, 2014 based on the Syrian Constitution and relevant laws and in a real and democratic presidential race to which 24 candidates belonging to different parties and representing all the categories and components of the Syrian society had applied. It is also my pleasure to call on you to send a group of your respectable MPs and election experts to Syria to follow up the presidential elections in our country, starting from our trust in your objective and supportive stances towards the Syrian people and their right to choose their presidential candidate and political future with complete honesty, freedom and transparency and away from foreign interference.”
Al-Lahham’s letters added that “it is the first time Syria witnesses a contest between several candidates for the post of the president. It is our pleasure to share us seeing how the Syrian people are going to choose their president with complete democracy, particularly under the ongoing systematic political and media war being waged by western and Arab countries and media institutions against the Syrian state and people.”
The letters were sent to the parliaments of the friendly countries of Russia, China, India, South Africa, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador and Armenia.
Al-Lahham thanked Syria’s friendly countries’ parliaments and people for their support to the country’s unity and sovereignty and for their rejection of the foreign-backed international takfiri terrorism which has been targeting Syria over the past three years.
