Danish humanitarian organization: Unexploded ordnance threatens Gaza residents even in the future

Copenhagen, (ST)-The Danish Refugee Council, a humanitarian non-governmental organization, warned of the danger of unexploded ordnance resulting from the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip and its devastating effects on civilians, especially children, even in the future.

Agence France-Presse quoted Corinne Linkar, a member of the organization, as saying in a report in this regard: “The unexploded ordnance used in densely populated areas, such as Gaza Strip, will continue to pose a constant threat and danger to civilians even after the fighting stops,” adding: “These remnants often cause long-term injuries and deaths after the end of conflicts.”

After an investigation that lasted for several weeks, the organization, which is active in Gaza Strip, estimated that explosive ordnance, whether exploded or not, is spread across many residential areas in the devastated Palestinian Strip.

In the light of the limited humanitarian aid allowed by the Israeli occupation entity to enter Gaza, the report pointed out that the residents of the Strip suffer from a severe shortage of basic materials, and while searching for necessities among the rubble, they may be exposed to the remnant ordnances.

Only 19 percent of victims of explosive ordnance receive first aid, the organization added, warning that children are most at risk “as they may mistake these ordnance for toys or scrap metal.”

In a statement to Agence France-Presse, Lincar indicated that the Israeli occupation forces use weapons indiscriminately in civilian areas and repeatedly in violation of international humanitarian law, and that these ordnances will continue to kill and maim for a long time.
