Cairo, (ST) – Syria was elected yesterday as the Head of the Executive Office of the Arab Council for Population and Development for a period of two years, and Iraq as deputy, during the office’s work held in Egypt.

The Syrian delegation headed by Eng. Samar Al-Sabai, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor participated in the office’s work.

Minister Al-Sabai pointed out that the meeting provided an opportunity for discussion on everything related to the issue of “population dynamics”, which constitutes a fundamental pillar of development in its humanitarian and economic dimensions.

She said that the renewal of opportunities for consultation, exchange of expertise and constructive dialogue contribute to achieving further development in the standards of joint Arab action.

The members of the Executive Office reviewed the proposed agenda for the sixth regular session of the Arab Population Council and the memoranda submitted by the Arab countries, which include several items, the most important of which are: preparing a study on the exchange of population data on expatriates between Arab population councils and committees and studying the challenges and causes related to the unequal population distribution between urban and rural areas.

The agenda will also include discussing the empowerment of the elderly to participate effectively in society and celebrating the Arab Population Day and studying the social, cultural and health determinants of women’s unmet needs in the field of family planning, which Syria presents.

The preparation of a regional framework to enhance the role of youth in the green economy, presented by Syria, and preparing and coordinating Arab positions to participate in the session of the United Nations Population and Development Commission will also be discussed.

During the meeting, proposals and recommendations were presented regarding the items and a recommendation was made to present them to the meeting of the sixth regular session of the Arab Population and Development Council, which will be held on November 25th.

Yesterday, with Syria’s participation, the activities of the Arab Sustainable Development Week in its fifth edition were launched at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, under the title “Sustainable Solutions for a Better Future…Flexibility and Adaptability in a Developing Arab World.”
