FAO: conflicts and climate crisis worsen hunger situation

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned that recent years have witnessed a worsening of global food insecurity conditions.
FAO Deputy Director-General Maurizio Martina told the Italian news agency AKI that “recent years have unfortunately witnessed a frightening worsening of global food insecurity conditions as a result of three main critical issues: the impact of conflicts, climate change and completely unexpected and exceptional situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Martina referred to what was stated in the Global Hunger Index report and said: “We are committed, in developing countries in particular, to work with institutions and governments to implement concrete projects capable of strengthening the resilience of local communities.”
Martina stressed the need to “manage water and climate crises, transform agricultural systems, and other essential interventions that serve local communities, such as afforestation and sustainable fishing policies,” stressing that “it is not easy,” and calling for “enhancing food security and working more and better.”
