Kaag: Syria is Committed to Implementing the Agreement on Chemical Weapons Elimination

DAMASCUS,(ST)_ Head of the joint mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations in charge of monitoring the disposal of chemical weapons in Syria, Sigrid Kaag, stressed that the Syrian government meet its obligations in transporting and destruction of chemical weapons, and 92 percent of the agreement is completed.

In a press conference in Damascus Four Seasons Hotel yesterday Kaag expressed optimism to complete the agreement before the deadline, which expires on June 30.

“The Syrian government has been very cooperative after accession to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and spared no efforts to get rid of chemical weapons by June 30.” Kaag said in response to questions

She pointed out that the current task is to remove the remaining 8 percent of chemical weapons under the current circumstances as soon as possible and to prevent its access to the ” wrong hands “, where the impact could be ” very negative.”

She explained that the mission conveys the information given by the Syrian government on the attack on the convoy carrying weapons, to the UN Secretary -General and head of the organization, noting that the Syrian government notified the Mission of attempts to attack the weapons sites, a matter which forced the Syrian government to transfer these weapons to other sites.

Last Wednesday, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal al-Miqdad discussed with Kaag latest developments related to the Syrian chemical file and the substantial progress made in the context of Syria’s implementation of its obligations in line of its accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
