French Foreign Minister: Europe is threatened with division and dependency after Trump’s victory

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that Europe is threatened with division against the backdrop of the arrival of a new US administration to power, unless the countries of the continent take the necessary measures to become a leading geopolitical power.

In an interview with the French newspaper “Le Parisien”, Barrot expressed his fear that Europe will be exposed to division against the backdrop of the change in the United States and the election of Donald Trump as the new US president, calling on Europe to strengthen its position in the industrial, military and commercial fields in order to avoid dependency on Washington.

The French minister said: “Our generation must emerge from the state of denial, and gather its courage to change the fate that threatens Europe with becoming a dependent and old continent, and turning into a museum.”

French media recently highlighted the serious economic problems that may occur in Europe after Donald Trump wins the presidential elections, especially since he confirmed his desire to impose additional customs duties, as Trump described the European Union as exploitative and threatened it with the principle of “an eye for an eye”, saying: “The European Union is bad, it sends us its goods and does not accept our goods.”

For his part, the former European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Frenchman Thierry Labreton, predicted a “fatal crisis for Europe” after Trump’s return to the White House, explaining that Trump’s election is not good news for Europe, as it means a significant increase in customs duties.

Former French President Francois Hollande confirmed that the results of the US elections could represent a turning point for France, Europe and the world, considering that Trump’s victory means an increase in unemployment and perhaps in inflation in France and a decrease in growth, because there will be a very significant deficit in the US budget, and undoubtedly, a changing monetary policy.

For its part, the newspaper “Politico” reported that the European Union has prepared measures in the event of a major trade war with the United States.
