Syria participates in High-Level International Conference to enhance cooperation in combating terrorism in Kuwait

KUWAIT, Nov.5, (ST)– Syria participates in High-Level International Conference “Strengthening International Counter – Terrorism Cooperation and Building Agile Border Security Mechanisms – The Kuwaiti Phase of the Dushanbe Process”.” which is held in Kuwait .

In a speech during the conference, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Habib Abbas, who heads the Syrian delegation, stressed that the increase in terrorist and criminal activities that our world faces today has become a common threat to all countries, which requires the establishment of a unified approach to combat cross-border terrorism and organized crime. This includes strengthening national, regional and international efforts in this field without any discrimination or selectivity.

Ambassador Abbas pointed out that Syria, since 2011 until now, has been fighting terrorism coming to it from all corners of the earth, and it has succeeded, in cooperation with friendly countries, in defeating most of it, and it is still working to pursue the remaining terrorist elements on its territory.

He considered that the continued illegal and completely unjustified presence of American and Turkish forces in northern and eastern Syria under the pretext of fighting terrorism falls within the context of investing in terrorism and providing cover for the continuation of terrorist activities and the commission of their brutal crimes.

In this context, Abbas stressed that the primary responsibility for combating terrorism on the territory of any country falls primarily on that country and its official authorities, which makes it illegal for any actions that take place on its territory without its approval or without authorization from the Security Council, and consider it a clear violation of the provisions of the United Nations Charter, regardless of the pretexts and justifications provided for carrying out these actions.

The Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates added: “the unilateral coercive measures imposed by some countries against other countries are a form of economic terrorism and a tool of collective punishment against peoples since they are causing great human suffering to the population and creates a suitable environment for the expansion of extremism and the penetration of terrorism into societies by exploiting the economic conditions from which those societies suffer. They also hinder the ability of countries to confront terrorist organizations. That is why Syria calls for the immediate and unconditional lifting of these measures.”

Ambassador Abbas renewed Syria’s full commitment to international cooperation in the field of combating terrorism and its readiness to cooperate with all international parties to achieve regional and international security and stability, on the basis of respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and its resolutions related to combating terrorism, foremost of which is respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states and ending foreign occupation.
