The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Monkeypox Is Out of Control

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned that the situation regarding the Monkeypox outbreak on the African continent is out of control.

Russia Today quoted Dr. Ngashi Ngongo, an official at the center, as saying: “Cases of monkeypox continue to spread alarmingly in the African continent, where they have exceeded 500 percent compared to last year.”

Ngongo stressed the need to strengthen political participation and financial support to control the current outbreak of the disease, warning that the new strain could turn into another pandemic, with the risk of transmission through sexual contact.

According to data from the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 19 African countries have witnessed more than 48 thousand suspected cases of infection, including 1048 deaths since the beginning of this year.

Central Africa, the worst affected by the outbreak, has 85.7 percent of infections and 99.5 percent of deaths recorded on the continent. The spread of the new strain has been detected in some European countries, such as Sweden, Germany and Britain.
