Wennesland describes humanitarian situation in northern Gaza Strip as dire, calls for immediate ceasefire
The UN envoy to the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza Strip and for the entry of aid, stressing the need to avoid unilateral occupation steps aimed at undermining the work of UNRWA.
Wennesland said in a briefing to the UN Security Council tonight: “We have entered the second year of this horrific war in the Strip, and the region is on the verge of another dangerous escalation, and the violence in the occupied Palestinian territory and the wider region shows no signs of abating.”
Wennesland indicated that what he saw during his visit to Gaza last week was beyond imagination, saying: “In the southern part of the Strip, I saw the massive destruction that this war has inflicted on the population. I saw the massive destruction of residential buildings, roads, hospitals and schools. I saw thousands living in temporary tents, with nowhere else to go as winter approaches,” describing the humanitarian situation in the northern Gaza Strip as dire, especially as it has not received any humanitarian aid since the beginning of October.
