South Africa is set to submitt a detailed memorandum to the International Court of Justice in The Hague on Monday, including additional facts and arguments to prove that Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
According to South African diplomatic sources, the new memorandum includes more evidence, interspersed with criminal details, to prove that Israel is indeed committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of violating the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide in its attack on the Gaza Strip.
South Africa submitted an 84-page file to the court, in which it collected evidence of Israel’s killing of thousands of citizens in the Gaza Strip, and creating conditions “conducive to their physical destruction,” which is considered a crime of “genocide” against them.
In early 2024, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocide in Gaza and direct incitement to it, and rejected in its ruling the Israeli request to dismiss the lawsuit filed by South Africa.
Several countries joined South Africa in its complaint against Israel, the occupying power, including Turkey, Nicaragua, Palestine, Spain, Mexico, Libya and Colombia.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, which has resulted in the killing of 42,924 citizens and the injury of 100,833 others, most of whom are children and women, while thousands remain missing under the rubble.
