SYP 890 Million for Ensuring New Water Resources in Sweida

 During his meeting with members of the governorate council in Sweida, Minister of water Resources Bassam Hana has asserted the ministry ‘s keenness with respect to safeguarding the potable water resources against any infiltration by the armed groups in the city.

The Minister also spoke about a new plan aiming to find a solution to tackle the shortage of potable water through digging new wells in the city and countryside.

”Many water resources were destroyed by the armed groups in the city of Sweida and its countryside, and due to this vandalism, the ministry is working now on drawing new strategy depending on providing new water resources, namely drinking water.”, the Minister asserted, adding that the investment plan for providing drinking water in Sweida reached SYP. 1.25 billion this year.

”The Ministry’s new strategy also included a plan for setting up new stations for generating electricity in addition to establishing treatment stations and special project for tackling sewage in the city.” Mr. Hana also cited, referring to the ministry ‘s intention in setting up special station for combating contamination of water resources in Sweida.

He also underscored the importance of treating sewage water and combating pollution to preserve the salubrious environment in the mountainous city of Sweida.

” the government allocated SYP. 890 million to provide the required equipment in order to set up 9 wells and further 2 million for installing new pipelines to connect the two dams of Sahwit al-khouder and Hobran.

On his part, the director of water resources in Sweida, Yahia Noufal, asserted that the governorate is currently suffering from a shortage in drinking water due to the decline in rainfalls this year. He also said that this decline was reflected negatively upon the level of water in dams to reach 6.5 cubic meter.

The participants in the meeting called for setting up new wells to meet the government’s increased demand for water, namely at this juncture which witnessed a notable increase in the number of the homeless in the city.
