United Nations: Israel’s Continued Shelling of Northern Gaza Threatens to Empty the Area of All Palestinians

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned today that the policies and practices of the Israeli occupation in the northern Gaza Strip threaten to empty the area of all Palestinians, stressing that what is happening amounts to terrible crimes, including crimes against humanity.

In a statement today, reported by AFP, Turk pointed out that more than 150,000 people have been martyred, injured or missing in Gaza over the past year, expressing his fear that this number will rise significantly due to the intensity and nature of the Israeli bombing operations currently taking place in northern Gaza.

“The northern Gaza Strip is witnessing the darkest moments with Israeli forces actually subjecting an entire population to shelling, siege and the threat of famine,” he said, stressing that the shelling on the area does not stop.

Turk pointed out that access to this part of Gaza is very limited and almost no aid has arrived in the area for weeks, so many are now at risk of starvation.
