The 6th World Media Summit, held in Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang Province, stressed the importance of adopting innovative methods to responsibly employ artificial intelligence in media work, which will contribute to accelerating digital transformation and enhancing the media’s ability to tell stories of sustainable development more effectively.

The summit, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Media Transformation”, brought together over 500 participants from 106 countries and regions, including representatives of 208 mainstream media outlets, government agencies and international organizations, including the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The summit participants pointed to the pivotal role of the media in facing the challenges and exploiting the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence in the global media landscape. They called for strengthening international efforts to govern this intelligence due to its profound impact on various aspects of economic and social development. They warned at the same time of the potential risks of this technology.

The participants stressed the need to adhere to professional ethics and journalistic standards, and the importance of confronting the use of artificial intelligence in spreading misleading news and rumours, and investing its potential in developing methods of collecting and disseminating news with a focus on highlighting its positive role in promoting sustainable development and improving the quality of life.

They noted that the effective use of this technology can contribute to building a better future for humanity.
