The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates strongly condemned the repeated Israeli attacks on the positions of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), calling on the international community to ensure the continuation of the work of these forces and their protection. “These Israeli attacks and actions do not merely represent targeting the international forces, but rather constitute a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, and may amount to a war crime” The ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The statement pointed out that these attacks are part of Israel’s policy of refusing to implement the resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations, especially Resolution 1701.
The ministry called on the international community to take a firm stance to support UNIFIL forces and ensure their continuation of work and not to expose them or threaten their security and safety.
It also called on them to condemn Israel and oblige it to immediately stop its hostile practices in compliance with the principles on which the United Nations was founded, which member states must adhere to and consolidate with all the means at their disposal.
The ministry noted in its statement the role of the United Nations forces, which it has been playing since its establishment in 1978, leadership and personnel, military and administrative, in maintaining security and peace in south Lebanon, in addition to its contribution to development in local communities, which helps build stability in the region.
