Damascus, (ST) – The National Earthquake Center announced that monitoring stations recorded an earthquake at 10:46 this morning, about 45 km east of the city of Malatya in Turkey, with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale.
In a statement to SANA, the Head of the Center, Dr. Raed Ahmed clarified that as a result of the earthquake in eastern Malatya, weak aftershocks occurred with a magnitude of less than 3 on the Richter scale, which were felt by residents of some eastern and northern governorates in Syria.
Ahmed indicated that the epicenter of the earthquake in Malatya is 577 km away from Damascus and 250 km away from Aleppo, which is relatively far from Syrian cities.
SANA correspondents on Wednesday reported earlier that residents of the governorates of Aleppo, Hasakah and DeirEzzor felt a weak tremor.
