Kaag: Some 80 percent of Chemical Weapons in Syria, Destroyed

NEWYORK,(ST)_ Head of the joint mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations Sigrid Kaag yesterday emphasized that ” nearly 80 percent of chemical weapons in Syria were destroyed until today (Saturday).”

In a statement released by the UN News Centre, Kaag explained that “that the mission had made progress in closing production sites and storage of chemical weapons and destroyed more empty containers of mustard gas,” noting increase participation to keep the pace of work in order to comply the deadline set by the organization’s Executive Board on June 30 for completing the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria.

Syria has repeatedly affirmed its commitment in connection with the destruction of chemical weapons, despite some countries’ attempts to politicize this issue and provide support to the armed terrorist groups that committed the heinous terrorist crimes against Syria and the Syrians.

She described acceleration of the pace of work as “positive and necessary to ensure progress towards the set deadline.”

On March 30th, Kaag commended Syria cooperation with the mission, and what has been accomplished in the context of its commitment to its obligations. She expressed satisfaction and appreciation for the close cooperation with the Syrian authorities, confirming that the joint mission and the international community are aware of the challenges and risks, especially the difficult security situation Syria undergoes in implementing its obligations.
