Sabbagh: Unilateral coercive measures prevent Syria from achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Bassam Sabbagh discussed with President of the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly Philemon Yang aspects of interest to Syria within the framework of General Assembly during its current session, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

During the meeting, Sabbagh stressed the importance of confronting political polarization’s attempts which are practiced by some well-known countries that seek to use this international platform to serve their own agendas.

He emphasized the need to enhance the spirit of consensus among member states in a manner in a way that harmonizes with the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter.

Sabbagh explained that what has been achieved so far in terms of sustainable development goals at the international level does meet the minimum level of ambitions, which requires a change in the approach and methods of the United Nations’ work.

“For Syria the situation is much more complicated due to the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the country by the United States and the European Union which prevent it from achieving the desired progress in the sustainable development goals as well as prevent Syria from meeting its citizens need,” Sabbagh pointed out.

He stressed the need for the United Nations to focus its attention on removing all obstacles facing member states to ensure that no one is left behind.

Sabbagh, Araghchi discuss repercussions of Israeli aggression on Lebanon

Also on Sunday, Sabbagh discussed with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi repercussions of treacherous and cowardly Israeli aggression on Lebanon that caused the martyrdom of Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

The two sides condemned this criminal terrorist act by the Israeli entity, affirming that the martyrdom of Sayyed Hassan who dedicated his life to the resistance of the Israeli occupation, will not discourage the resistance from continuing its honorable struggle.

The two foreign ministers agreed to intensify coordination and communication to mobilize the regional and international efforts necessary to end the crimes committed by the Zionist entity against the peoples of the region.
