Sabbagh discusses with Guterres the Israeli escalation in the region

NEW YORK, SEP.28, (ST)- During their meeting in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh reviewed with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, the Israeli escalation in the region, and the dangerous repercussions resulting from Israel’s ongoing attacks on Syria, its war on the Palestinian people, and its aggression against Lebanon, which comes within the framework of the Israeli entity’s efforts to  expand its war to include countries in the region, which represents a threat to regional and international peace and security.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Sabbagh talked about the efforts made by the Syrian government to achieve security and stability in Syria through adopting the priority of counter-terrorism efforts, and working to end the illegal military presence on Syrian territory, represented by the American forces in northeastern Syria, and the Turkish forces in the northwest of the country, separatist militias and terrorist organizations associated with them.

The agency added that Sabbagh and Guterres discussed aspects of  cooperation between the Syrian government and the United Nations, especially with regard to improving the humanitarian situation, noting the importance of focusing on early recovery projects and securing the necessary funding for them, and pressing to lift the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people.

For his part, Guterres expressed his gratitude for Syria’s continued granting permission to the United Nations to bring in humanitarian aid through border crossings, supporting the expansion and implementation of early recovery projects, and facing the challenge resulting from the lack of funding.

He indicated that he had issued instructions to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to activate assistance mechanisms for Syria to deal with the repercussions resulting from the current events in the region.
