Sabbagh Meets with UN officials, Brazilian and Serbian counterparts on sidelines of UNGA’S meeting

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh in New York, together with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Miriana Iger, discussed the cooperation between Syria and the Committee and ways to enhance it to better meet the growing humanitarian needs of Syrians.

Minister Sabbagh praised the important humanitarian role played by the ICRC in supporting efforts to improve the humanitarian and living situation of Syrians, stressing the rejection of politicizing the humanitarian file, and the need for donors to fulfill their financial pledges to provide the necessary funding for humanitarian activities in Syria.

Minister Sabbagh also met with Geir Pedersen, Special Envoy of the secretary-general of the United Nations to Syria, where Sabbagh stressed the need for the United Nations to shoulder its responsibilities regarding the serious threats to the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, represented by the continued Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan, its ongoing aggressions on Syrian territory, as well as the illegal presence of American and Turkish forces on Syrian territory.

Minister Sabbagh also met with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira during which views were exchanged on strengthening relations between the two countries in all areas of mutual interest.

He pointed to the increasing role of Brazil in the multilateral framework, especially within the BRICS group, expressing Syria’s desire to cooperate and partner with this important group.

For his part, Vieira stressed the historical relations between the two countries, pointing out the possibility of developing and strengthening these relations in many areas, expressing satisfaction with the level of cooperation between the two countries within the framework of the United Nations.

Minister Sabbagh participated in the event held by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on the sidelines of the General Assembly, which was dedicated to introducing the Serbian government’s vision for the future of the country and its renaissance.

During the conversation with Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric, he stressed his country’s keenness to strengthen relations with Syria in various fields, appreciating the existing cooperation and mutual support in international forums, and expressed his aspiration to hold periodic rounds of consultations between the two countries.
