Peskov: Amending Russia’s nuclear doctrine is a clear warning to the West against any aggression on Russia

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that the amendment to the Russian nuclear doctrine is an explicit warning to the West against any nuclear or conventional aggression against Russia, noting that everyone is aware of the capabilities and size of the Russian nuclear triad.

Peskov said in response to a question about whether the entire or part of the updated version of the Russian nuclear deterrence doctrine is scheduled to be published: “Amendments have now been drafted to the document, which is the foundations of the state’s policy in the field of nuclear deterrence, and this is the second document, and together they actually constitute what we informally call the nuclear doctrine,” adding: “Yesterday it was announced by President Vladimir Putin, and a decision on whether to publish or not will be made at the appropriate time.”

Peskov pointed out that the whole world is well aware of Russia’s nuclear capabilities and its deterrent role, stressing that the Russian nuclear triad remains the absolute guarantor of deterrence.

The Russian presidential spokesman added: “Rational politicians in the West have already taken President Putin’s statements about nuclear deterrence seriously, and the Kremlin will inform unfriendly countries of the updated text of the Russian nuclear doctrine if it is decided to make it public.”

The Russian President proposed at the permanent meeting of the Security Council on nuclear deterrence the discussion of the issue of updating the foundations of the state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence.

Putin said then: “As part of updating the state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence, it is proposed to consider aggression by a non-nuclear state with the participation of a nuclear state as a joint attack on the Russian Federation,” explaining that Russia has always taken a very responsible approach to the use of nuclear forces, and this is an extreme measure to protect the country’s sovereignty.
