United Nations Calls for Immediate Ceasefire and Urgent Humanitarian Assistance in Gaza Strip

The United Nations has renewed its call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the providing of humanitarian aid to all parts of the Strip, noting that about two million Palestinians have been displaced from their homes and are moving through streets filled with rubble, garbage and sewage as a result of the ongoing Israeli aggression for about 10 months.

In their speeches during a session of the UN Security Council yesterday on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, delegates and representatives of member states unanimously agreed on the need to reach an immediate ceasefire and the introduction of aid to Gaza, including polio vaccines, warning of an escalation of regional tensions if the war on Gaza Strip continues, WAFA reported.

Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky expressed regret that the Security Council was unable to establish a ceasefire in Gaza Strip for ten months and remained a passive refarding the ongoing bloodshed.

“The failure of the Security Council to implement the ceasefire resolution in Gaza is disappointing,” Polyansky stressed during his briefing, adding: “the occupation hinders the work of humanitarian organizations in Gaza Strip and has no intention to stop its aggression.”

For his part, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ammar Benjama, called for a “humanitarian truce” to ensure the immediate delivery of much-needed polio vaccines in the Gaza Strip, which the occupation has turned into an uninhabitable place for Palestinians because of the horrific massacres it continues to commit against them.

Benjama added that a permanent ceasefire is the only way to avoid further escalation in the region, calling for the immediate and effective implementation of Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2735, which guarantees the cessation of aggression and the complete withdrawal of occupation forces from the strip and the return of displaced people to their homes.

The UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process Tor Winsland warned that the situation in the region could flare up at any moment, noting that, “after 321 days of the Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip, which led to the martyrdom and injury of tens of thousands, reaching a ceasefire agreement is necessary for regional peace and security.”

The head of the health emergency unit of the organization “Save the Children”, Louisa Paxton, warned of an approaching humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

“More than 1.9 million people have been displaced from their homes and more than 14,000 children have been martyred during the aggression,” she said, warning that the polio outbreak in Gaza poses a major threat to all children in the region.
