Human Rights Council Adopts a resolution on the “Situation of Human Rights in the Occupied Syrian Golan”

GENEVA,(ST)_ In the context of the work of its 25th session, the Human Rights Council adopted this evening the Resolution,  entitled “Situation of human rights in the occupied Syrian Golan “, which was proposed by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation OIC under Chapter VII of the Council’s agenda.

Some 33 countries voted in favor of the resolution, the United States was the only country voted against it, European countries abstained, except Russia, while Japan and South Korea, abstained, with a very advanced result because the supporters of the resolution are more than two-thirds of the council members.

Before the vote, Syria permanent representative to the UN in Geneva Ambassador Dr. Faisal al-Hamwi, delivered Syria ‘s statement in which he talked about the Israeli violations of human rights in the Golan and in all walks of life, as confirmed by the Committee in charge of Investigating Israeli Practices,  the suffering of Syrian prisoners in Israeli jails and Israel‘s prevention of  visits through Quneitra border checkpoint.

Hamwi denounced U.S. support for Israel, which increases its aggressiveness, arrogance and its sense of being above accountability and above the international law, a matter which encourages the continuation of this abnormal situation and intensifies conditions in the region.

For his part, Pakistan’s representative said that Israel committed grave and systematic violations since its occupation of the Syrian Golan and listed some of these abuses, including prevention people ‘s contacts with their home country, stressing that the situation in the Golan should be highlighted to compel Israel to comply with international law and end its occupation of the Golan.

However, the US delegate called for the abolition of the agenda‘s 7th  article, and the pulling of the draft resolution on the situation in the Golan Heights, describing it as “farce”.
