Slovenia welcomes ICJ’s advisory opinion on the ‘unlawful’ Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories

OCCUPIEDVAL-QUDS, JUL.20, (ST)-Slovenia welcomed the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on the ‘unlawful’ Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, calling on the Israeli entity to comply with international law.

In a statement, the Slovenian Ministry called on the United Nations and member states to take effective steps to fully implement the interpretation of international law as determined by the court, noting that the advisory opinion is issued by the main judicial body of the United Nations, and it is an official judicial decision that has legal weight and authority.

Earlier yesterday, the International Court of Justice confirmed in its advisory opinion that the presence of the Israeli occupation is illegal in the Palestinian territories, and that Israel must stop the occupation and end its illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territories as soon as possible.

The court’s opinion stated that Israel must immediately stop any new settlement activity and remove all colonists from the occupied Palestinian territories, and that Israel must compensate for the material and moral losses of individuals in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In its opinion, the court stressed the duty of states not to recognize the illegal presence of colonists and the Israeli entity in the occupied Palestinian territories, and not to provide any assistance that would help Israel maintain the status quo in the occupied Palestinian territories.
