New York, (ST) – The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini affirmed that the blatant Israeli disregard for international humanitarian law in Gaza continues unabated.
He pointed out that the Israeli occupation has bombed several schools, including those belonging to the agency, in the stricken strip in the past few days.
Lazzarini stated in a post on the “X” platform: In an almost daily incident, at least 8 schools were bombed during the past ten days, 6 of which belong to UNRWA.
He stressed the need for schools to never be used for fighting or military purposes, as they are “not a target.
Lazzarini noted that “the war robbed girls and boys in Gaza of their childhood and education,” but losing our humanity must not become the new norm regarding what is happening there.
Lazzarini renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza Strip.
He also attached his post with pictures showing the destruction caused to an UNRWA school as a result of an Israeli bombing that targeted it, despite being crowded with displaced people who had sought refuge there in search of safety.
Yesterday, the Israeli occupation bombed an UNRWA school housing displaced people in the Nuseirat camp in the middle of the Gaza Strip, killing 40 Palestinians and wounding 18, just two days after its warplanes bombed another UNRWA school housing a large number of displaced people in the camp which led to the death of 12 Palestinians and the injury of dozens, most of them children and women.
