Carpentry craft revived in the city of Darayya in Damascus countryside with the return of services and infrastructure

Carpentry profession is widely spread in Darayya city in Damascus countryside, and the residents of this city were known for this profession many years before the crisis in Syria as it has been a legacy for inhabitants and a source of income for many families.

Darayya, which was a stronghold for terrorist groups that wreaked havoc in the city and displaced the citizens, was liberated from terrorism in 2016 by the Syrian Arab Army.

Many of Darayya carpenters, who unfortunately left their workshops due to terrorism, have returned to their city and started reviving the profession there after services and infrastructure were restored.

After the craftsmen resumed their work in the craft that they inherited from their fathers, many wooden structures, including living rooms, bedrooms, tables and office furniture, made by skilled craftsmen from the city of Daraya, returned to decorate the city’s shops and halls and attract customers again.
In a statement to a SANA reporter, a number of craftsmen stressed that the carpentry craft, which requires innovation, creativity, and professional design, was linked to the city of Daraya, whose craftsmen were able to produce thousands of pieces that attracted and satisfied customers from inside and outside Syria, and today they are working to restore and revive this craft despite all the difficulties.
The craftsman Akram Hijazi, who established his workshop in the city of Sweidah during the years of crisis, returned to Daraya in 2019 after liberation, and gradually began establishing his workshop and producing furniture pieces, thus encouraging a number of workers to manufacture the various products requested by the customer.
The craftsman, Ghayaz Gharz Eddin, has a similar story. He traveled to Lebanon and established a small carpentry workshop there, manufacturing salon furniture and tables of various shapes and types.
However, despite the success he achieved, he chose to return to Daraya where he began to rehabilitate his workshop, secure work supplies, and contribute with the people of his city to revive this craft again.
“The ongoing participatory work between the local council and economic and civil society activities in Daraya contributed to the return of 800 carpenters, 400 of who specialize in the furniture industry and are distributed throughout the city”, according to the head of the local council, Samhan Al-Sayyid Omar.
