Russian parliamentarian: The illegal presence of foreign forces on Syrian territory is a violation of the United Nations Charter

Deputy Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council, Andrei Klimov, confirmed that Russia highly values and respects Syria’s sovereignty over its lands, and is doing a lot to strengthen this sovereignty.

Klimov said in an interview with SANA’s reporter in Moscow today: “The Russian Federation condemns all forms of the illegal presence of foreign forces on Syrian lands and denounces the policy of countries that violate the principle of the unity of these lands. Russia views the illegal presence of American and foreign forces on Syrian territory as an occupation and a violation of the principles and outcomes of the United Nations Charter”.

Regarding the occupied Syrian Golan, Klimov explained that it is part of Syrian territory, and therefore the Israeli occupation of it must be ended by means decided by the Syrian people and their leadership, stressing that Russia will contribute its role diplomatically and politically to achieve this goal.

Klimov did not rule out Syria joining the BRICS group, pointing out that its recent invitation and participation in this gathering in Vladivostok, especially during Russia’s presidency of the group, indicates the rapprochement between BRICS and the Syrian side.

He explained that granting membership to any country is done with the collective approval of the BRICS members, so the accession process must be followed up and continued to stress its necessity in order for it to be unanimously approved.
