Parliaments of Syria Friends Meet in Tehran to Discuss Crisis in Syria

TEHRAN, (ST)- Delegations from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Russia, Algeria, Venezuela and Cuba took part in first meeting of the heads of foreign policy committees of Syria’s friendly countries parliaments, which kicked off on Wednesday in Tehran.

The meeting is to discuss means of halting human rights violations against the Syrian people, ways to provide assistance to crisis-affected citizens, in addition to the possibility of adopting a unified stance at the International Parliamentary Union meeting, due in Geneva between March 17th and 21st, to support the Syrian people in the confrontation of armed terrorist groups.

Fadia Deep, Chairperson of the Syrian People’s Assembly’s Foreign and Arab Affairs Committee, said in her speech during the meeting that “Syria has been an example of a secular state where people from different religions and sects have lived together in an atmosphere of security, amity and tolerance.”

“The Syrian people reject the takfiris who want to impose their mentality and beliefs on all the Syrians, even on non-Moslems, by force,” Deep said.

She pointed out that the West’s unfair economic siege on Syria has had grave impacts on the living of the Syrian people and on the country’s health, services and food sectors, stressing that the Western countries which imposed the sanctions against the Syrians are paying millions of dollars to buy weapons and send them to the terrorist groups in Syria.

Deep talked about the political and social reform steps implemented by the Syrian government, including amending the constitution and issuing information and elections laws to provide a developed legislative framework for political pluralism in the country.

She urged comprehensive national dialogue in Syria to settle differences and to draw up Syria’s new future.

Deep stressed that the terrorism, against which Syria had warned, spread to cross the borders and kill innocent people in other countries, referring to the ongoing terrorist activities hitting Ukraine, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Libya and Lebanon. She warned that “terrorism will move to other countries of the world unless the efforts of peace-loving countries are unified against this cancer-like phenomenon.”

She urged all peace seekers to help stop colonialists’ intervention in countries internal affairs and to support human justice in words and deeds, because “terrorism is like the fire that can’t be smothered without cooperation to attain international security and peace.”

The Syrian parliamentarian hailed Iran’s positive role in solving problems in the region.

For his part, Ali Larijani, Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, said that the “West is the party which provides terrorists with weapons and uses the armed terrorist groups as a pressure card to pass its schemes.

He added “the countries, which claim that they feel pain for the Syrian people’s suffering, should adopt certain mechanism to solve the the crisis in Syria.”
