An international magazine documents the treatment of a rare case in Damascus Hospital

Damascus (ST) – A little girl regained her health after suffering from an illness that had accompanied her since her birth, 14 years ago. The Thoracic Surgery Department at the General Authority of Damascus Hospital succeeded in treating her from a congenital lung deformity, and as it was a rare case, the internationally peer-reviewed journal, International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, documented and published the case.

In details, the director of the hospital, Dr. Ahmed Abbas, states that the girl visited the hospital with symptoms of recurrent lower respiratory infection since birth, with two hospital admissions, where she was admitted to the thoracic surgery department and had all the necessary radiological examinations and investigations performed.

Dr. Abbas stated that the case was diagnosed with congenital lobar emphysema, which is a rare lung malformation that is usually discovered in the newborn period, and some rare cases have been reported in adults, pointing out that the gold standard for diagnosis is a CT scan.

Dr. Abbas indicated that the medical team made the surgical decision to remove the affected left upper lobe, pointing out that after the removal procedure, signs of the child’s gradual recovery appeared with clinical and radiological follow-up, and the child left the hospital after a week in good general condition.
