Recognizing the State of Palestine is a prerequisite for achieving peace in the Middle East, UN experts say

Geneva, (ST) – Experts from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights stressed that all countries of the world must follow the example of the 146 countries that recognized the State of Palestine, and use all available resources to reach an immediate ceasefire in Gaza Strip.

The experts said in a statement today that the recognition of the State of Palestine is an important recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people and their struggle and suffering for freedom and independence. They stressed that Palestine must be able to enjoy full self-determination, including the ability to exist, determine its destiny and develop freely as a state and people enjoying safety and security.

The experts pointed out that this recognition is a prerequisite for lasting peace in Palestine and the entire Middle East, starting with the immediate declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza Strip, and not carrying out further military incursions into Rafah.

Experts welcomed the recent recognition of the State of Palestine by Norway, Ireland and Spain, which comes after the General Assembly voted overwhelmingly, 143 votes, to support Palestine’s bid to become a full member of the United Nations on May 10.
