In Egypt, reporters criticizing the “Muslim Brotherhood” keep being persecuted; the recent victim is the editor-in-chief of the Al-Usbua newspaper Mustafa Bakri. He shared his trials and tribulations with the Voice of Russia.
It’s not the first attack attempt. Some time ago several “Muslim Brothers” tried to encircle my car in the street. The only thing that saved us was the quick reaction of my driver. I get letters from the so-called Egyptian branch of the “Islamic State of Iraq and Levant” where they threaten me and my family.
So, I’ve already got used to threats. And recently I was informed that “Brotherhood militants” started shriveling houses where TV and newsmen live. And soon this information was confirmed.
One night, when I came back home from work, I heard some noise in the street. Having looked out of the window, I understood that the house was surrounded. There were six cars packed with them. We called the police at once – luckily they arrived almost immediately, and the attackers were almost caught.
I don’t know, whether these people wanted to physically harm me or just scare. We, Egyptian mass media guys, are constantly under the gun. Everyone remembers how under Morsi “Islamists” stood by the gate of the Media Production City, attacked journalists, seized and broke their equipment. But I, as well as the majority of other Egyptian journalists, made their choice long ago and haven’t changed our stance since then.
The problem with the “Muslim Brotherhood” is that they think that terror and threats are a universal solution and mouth shutter. But I assure that their gangster methods only make us more determined to fight against them. Unfortunately, the West which allegedly stands for the freedom of speech in Egypt, turns a blind eye on their conduct, as, actually they have common goals. Here we can see double standards of the West in all their glory.
For example, Americans by no means want to acknowledge the overthrow of their friend Morsi as the people’s revolution. Millions of people, the entire country took to the streets against Morsi! . Why not say the same about the president of Ukraine who was actually opposed by fewer citizens? Where are their principles in this situation?
America doesn’t care about people, democracy, anything – it cares only about its own interests. Egyptians now have no other choice than to firmly stick to their stance and struggle against terrorists and bandits.
Why do you think these bandits are so defiant? Don’t we have any laws to stop them?
Our courts and police follow the existing laws to the letter. I know that I was attacked by bandits, the police know it, the court does, but under the law no shots were fired, there are no wounds, so it means there is no attack. Our laws didn’t foresee targeted terror from the “Brothers”. But I know that a corresponding law is coming soon. It will confirm the decision of the Council of Ministers to declare the “Muslim Brotherhood” a terrorist organization. Then we will need to swiftly pass an anti-terrorist law which will help to punish those exercising terrorism against civilians, including attacks on those in the media.
I want to tell that terrorism doesn’t live long if it has no external support. Now our homemade terrorists show their bravado only because they are protected by the top terrorist, that is the US. And as for us, we will be protected by the laws of our country. Egyptians hate violence, and they side with us, the free media. This gives us the strength to resist violence – and we will surely defeat bandits.
