Access of Humanitarian Aid to al-Yarmouk Camp Continues

DAMASCUS- The process of humanitarian aid access and people evacuation continues in the al-Yarmouk Palestinian Camp in Damascus in implementation of the popular peace initiative to solve the crisis in the camp, said supervisor of the Palestinian People’s Relief Campaign in al-Yarmouk Camp Abu Kifah Ghazi.

“At least 7700 food parcels have so far been distributed on the people who previously were trapped by the armed groups in the camp and some 3400 patients as well as students have also been evacuated from the area,” according to Ghazi. Some evacuated people have received first-aid services, while serious cases moved to hospitals in Damascus to receive treatment, he clarified.

Ghazi uncovered that the armed groups in the camp aimed to procrastinate in implementing the initiative. He called on the parties which signed the initiative to speed up the implementation in order to alleviate the suffering of the people inside and outside the camp and to restore security to the people after the area is free of arms and gunmen.

Anwar Abdul-Hadi, Director of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian Liberation Organization in Damascus hailed the resumption of food aid delivery to al-Yarmouk camp and the facilitations provided by the Syrian government to help the Palestinians.

He affirmed that carrying out the initiative and the return of families to their houses will be the only solution to the crisis in the camp.

For his part, Filippo Grandi, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), hailed cooperation in delivering aid to the camp and described what he saw as positive. He hoped that the camp will be free of weapons and gunmen so as to get more access of humanitarian assistance.
